BRANDON MILLER EARNS RIGHT TO QUALIFY AND RACE IN KENTUCKY
IN #40 WESTERMAN COMPANIES CHEVROLET FOR KEY MOTORSPORTS
SPARTA, KENTUCKY (July 13, 2007) – NASCAR driving hopeful Brandon Miller has earned the right to qualify and drive the #40 Westerman Companies Chevrolet Silverado for Key Motorsports in the Ford Built Tough 225 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the Kentucky Speedway Saturday night.
Improving his lap times in every practice session and showing consistency despite his recent inactivity, team owner Curtis W. Key, Sr., Director of Competition
Tommy Morgan and
Crew Chief Gary Showalter decided to replace veteran Chad Chaffin with Miller behind the wheel of the Key Motorsports machine following the final practice session for the Craftsman Truck Series teams on Friday evening.
The decision to go with Miller was made easier earlier in the afternoon when Chaffin successfully qualified his BAM Racing Dodge for Sunday’s NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, IL. Chaffin was still scheduled to fly to Kentucky following his final Cup practice Saturday to race the #40 truck after Miller qualified
it. Regardless of what position Miller did put his Westerman Companies’ mount, Chaffin would have had to start at the rear of the field, and that also helped steer the decision in Miller’s favor.
“We have a good race truck and probably the best motor we have had all year,” said Morgan. “It would have been a shame to have Brandon (Miller) help us get the truck set up for the race, qualify it in a decent position and then have to sit on the pit cart and watch Chad go to the back to start the race. He (Miller) did a really good job for
us today and we believe he earned the right to race the truck.
“It’s also a good decision for Chad, because he would have had to really hustle just to make it down here on time and then jump into a race truck that he hadn’t turned a single lap in and give us the best chance at a good finish. Now Chad can focus on his Cup ride while Brandon can now concentrate on our race truck. It’s better all around,”
added Morgan.
Though his final lap times in each practice session weren’t near the top of the list, Miller did show that he still had the skills that enabled him to enjoy moderate success in both a Busch Series race car and a Craftsman Truck in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Some of that success came for Richard Childress Racing in the team’s #21 Reese’s Busch
Series Chevrolet in 2005 and in several truck series engagements in 2003 and 2004. Miller likes what he sees in the Key Motorsports outfit.
“It’s a great opportunity to get back into the swing of things….especially with the great group of people at Key Motorsports,” said Miller, who for the last season and a half has been basically a test driver for RCR in Busch Series equipment.
“The race truck is really good and very drivable, which is good for me since it has been a few years since I last drove a truck. But once I got out there today and ran lap after lap, I became much more comfortable and confident in my ability to run smooth and consistent laps. I’m looking forward to the challenge and I want to bring home a good
finish for this team,” Miller stated.
Miller and Chaffin did talk by telephone for quite a while on Friday night in an effort to help Brandon in his transition back into the Truck Series and Chaffin also believes that the decision made by Key Motorsports to stay with Miller was the correct one.
“It (the decision) is going to allow everyone on the team to focus on just one driver and getting the best possible starting position for the truck in the team’s first of four races under sponsorship from the Westerman Companies,” Chaffin explained. “I was looking forward to it, but if Tommy and Gary give Brandon a good truck to drive, and
Brandon does what he needs to do in his first race, then Curtis (Key), the team and the sponsor are all going to be happy,” Chaffin said.
Miller will be the 19th of 36 trucks to qualify Saturday afternoon with the first truck to roll off of pit road at 4 p.m. Race time is set for 8 p.m.
